Abacus

ABACUS is an ancient technique that has been in existence since many millenniums & has also played a vital role in both our educational and practical lives. It is a device/equipment that is comprised of a frame and a rod, in which the rod is horizontally attached to the frame along with beads placed on the parallel rod.

History of Abacus

The history of abacus is as old as counting. The traces of abacus were found in 2400 B.C. Earlier, the calculations were done on sun-dried wooden frames with the help of sand dispersed on the frames. For writing purposes, they used their fingers or some sticks. After finishing the calculation, the sand was either thrown off or was reset again for further reuse.

Throughout history, man has developed different genres of abaci. Many civilizations contributed towards the world’s assets & therefore made a remarkable development in the field of mathematics. The Babylonians & Chinese also used abacus in the early 2400 B.C. Mayan civilizations abaci was considered to be the first device invented in mathematics.

Introduction to Modern Abacus

After a few decades, an instrument with modern frame and some beads connected to the rods was invented. This type of abacus still exists today. It is still in use in some Asian as well as Latin American countries. The Soroban abacus (Japanese) has become one of the valuable mathematical tool whereas. Schoty (Russian) is also popular in most of the western countries.

Nowadays, Abacus is used in pre-schools & elementary schools as it helps students in clearing the basics of number system & arithmetic. It assists in improving application skills, sharpens memory, keen observation and fosters reading writing & learning skills.

Even today in this modern & digitalized world, clerks & some small businessmen still choose abacus over electronic calculators.
